Patriotism

On the way to Afghanistan, Gary had a long layover in Baltimore. While in the lobby waiting, he struck up a conversation with a fellow passenger. Later, when meals were being served, Gary was given the usual coach meal. A dry, cold sandwich and something else. Soon the flight attendant came back and gave Gary a first class meal. Turns out the guy Gary was chatting to sent his meal back to Gary. Gary said it was 100 times better than the one they gave coach.

Small acts of patriotism like that gentleman sending Gary his meal really touch Gary. He loves his awards, his medals, etc. But when someone thanks him, or someone gives them their meal, when little kids are in awe because they see a "real, live ARMY MAN," that is what reminds Gary why he does what he does. It's for the everyday person. He truly believes in protecting those who can't protect themselves.

I have to remember this. He's proud of what he does. He does not resent the war, maybe the politics behind it, but he does not resent deploying. He does hate leaving his family, but he is also very, VERY proud to be a soldier. I just need to hold onto that. Part of what made me fall in love with him was his utter devotion and true love for being a soldier.

I totally understand. Dan used to be in the Navy and my ex husband was in the Air Force. Dan and I go out of our way to thank soldiers and show our gratitude for what they are doing. It's not a matter of believing in the war, it's supporting those men and women and their families, that are fighting for us. Thank you, Lin, for being one of the special ones!
